However, as time passes and new technologies that gradually replace ordinary units of currency emerge, the monetary sector strives to launch numismatic creations of a particular aesthetic and cultural value. Commemorative programs prove it in the most illustrative way.

A Person Behind: Who Was Harriet Tubman?

First things first, is Harriet Tubman on a coin? Yes, she is, and there were released a few numismatic creations, but let us break these down.

Harriet Tubman's life was a genuine fight: for her own rights, for freedom, for justice. It was all about abolitionism and the inevitable rejection of slavery. As such, she was born in March 1822 in Maryland into the brutal reality of enslavement, where she had to face constant injustice from a system she would spend her life defying.

Having been led by God, as she stated, Harriet eventually managed to escape slavery and then slowly led dozens of enslaved people to freedom through the Underground Railroad (the first ones were her family members for sure). However, it was not the final destination of her life. As soon as the Civil War broke out, Tubman joined the Union Army as a cook and nurse, before taking on even more dangerous roles as an armed scout and spy later.

This is how she became the first woman to lead an armed military raid in the United States! Nevertheless, the devastating days of war ended, and she turned her attention to women's rights and civil equality. It is no surprise that her personality was chosen as an appropriate figure to be positioned on the coin.

Design and the Main Physical Characteristics

In 2024, the US Mint released distinctive commemorative coins that were aimed at perpetuating the image of Harriet Tubman and celebrating the bicentennial of her birth. Under the "Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act," the Mint was to launch 3 designs for 3 denominations, i.e.,  a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver dollar, and a half dollar clad coin. Each may boast its unique properties and symbolic artwork that boosts the Harriet Tubman coin value for good.

$5 Gold Coin

Produced by: West Point Mint

Mintage Limit: 50,000

Auction Record: $950

The first coin in the line is made of premium gold and features Harriet Tubman in her post–Civil War years, gazing into the future. The reverse shows two clasped arms, which symbolize the care and support Tubman extended to others, surrounded by seven values that defined her life: Faith, Freedom, Family, Community, Self-Determination, Social Justice, and Equality.

Silver Dollar Coin

Produced by: Philadelphia Mint

Mintage Limit: 400,000

Auction Record: $100

The second Harriet Tubman coin for sale was struck in fine silver with a prominent figure offering her hand forward. On the reverse, silhouettes cross a bridge made of clasped hands, guided by the Big Dipper and North Star, symbolizing the path to liberation (which was paved by Harriet herself).

This is by far one of the most powerful commemorative issues that have ever existed! In particular, it honors Tubman’s military leadership during the Combahee River Raid, where she freed over 700 enslaved people. The obverse shows Tubman amid Civil War boats, while the reverse captures her as a Union spy, holding a spyglass beside a row of tents.

What Is the Harriet Tubman Coin Worth?

The value of any collectible depends on several factors, which usually come down to condition, rarity, grading, and market demand. For commemorative coins like those presented in text, their condition may not be relevant yet (since they all tend to be of superior condition as of now). However, grading by reputable services like NGC or PCGS may significantly boost the resale worth.

Besides, according to the legislation behind the 2024 Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coin Program, the initial sale price of each coin should have been calculated by combining the coin’s face value, a congressionally authorized surcharge, and the production cost, which includes materials, design, labor, marketing, and distribution. Buyers who placed prepaid bulk orders before release were eligible for reasonable discounts, not to mention.

Nevertheless, should it enter the secondary market, the prices can vary. Here are the main value ranges per coin, as of July 2025:
